Given that I picked my continuation of the Space Race idea from our <a style=\"color: #800000;\" title=\"Episode Thirty \u2013 Apollo Rising\" href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/bigredcouch\/?p=962\">Apollo Rising<\/a> episode, I&#8217;m not sure whether I succeeded or not<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fighting Like Balloons Armed With Dart-Guns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\">\u201cThose were some insane times; When things got really bad, you had armed raids, sabotage missions, soldiers in spacesuits shooting at each other \u2026 Balloons armed with dart-guns.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Lt%20Col%20William%20Scott%20(Ret).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lt. Col William Scott (Ret.), Lunar Recon<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Suit &amp; habitat punctures are boring.<br \/>\nIf the first hit is an instant death-sentence from suit blowout, or the first shot fired which <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> hit its target kills everyone in the habitat through depressurization, it puts the tension in the wrong place; The stand-off with an inexplicably-alive Otto Skorzeny in the wreckage of a crashed Nazi UFO shouldn\u2019t come down to the first person to yell \u201cTag; You\u2019re hit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Giant Steps, suit punctures and habitat leaks are consequences.<br \/>\nFighting a Selenian Brood-Warrior in the ice caverns of the South Pole and it gets a solid hit in? The Mild Consequence of \u201cSuit Leak\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s That Hissing Noise?\u201d might just keep you in the fight.<br \/>\nGetting your moon-suited ass handed to you by the descendants of the Confederate Space Program in the lava tubes of Mons Hadley? They just might accept the concession of \u201cScrambling To Fix A Cracked Faceplate\u201d &amp; let you withdraw from combat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unexpectedly Unexplored<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cAnyone who tells you that the Moon is fully understood is lying or an idiot.<br \/>\nThere is so much broken terrain that you can only get through on foot, so many valleys and caves impervious to orbital sensors, that there could be anything, and more importantly anyone out there.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Dr%20Martin%20King,%20self-styled%20Future%20Discoverer%20of%20the%20Selenian%20Race.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr.\u00a0Martin King, self-styled \u2018Future Discoverer of the Selenian Race\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have been asked about, and have explicitly not given, a No Moon Nazis guarantee.<br \/>\nIf I can come up with a reason to do it, I will totally have the ridiculous swastika-shaped building out of Iron Sky sitting in a valley, inexplicably unnoticed by orbital surveys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe found a secret outpost once.<br \/>\nI mean, the people in it knew about it, but I don\u2019t think they wanted anyone else to know they were there, so they got pretty excited when we rolled up the valley in a mining rover.<br \/>\nGuns were waved, and things got tense, but they calmed down once they saw that we were an exploration crew.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Dave.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Dave\u2019, Trucker<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t recognise their company logo; Simple thing, with a crescent moon and a single star.<br \/>\nWe did ask them if this was an area they\u2019d laid claim to, but for some reason they weren\u2019t bothered by us prospecting out there. Maybe they\u2019d already surveyed it?\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Ed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Ed\u2019, Prospector<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cI kind of think they were more interested in the Indian Space Agency base in the next valley.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Dave.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Dave\u2019, Trucker<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>By 2020, the moon has been somewhat inhabited for 45 years.<br \/>\nNobody\u2019s entirely sure how many countries have a presence on the Moon; All of the \u2018first world\u2019 nations, certainly, and an unknown number of the rest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Littered With Abandoned Technology<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cYou never know what you\u2019re going to find.<br \/>\nCouple of months ago we rescued a group of prospectors who\u2019d had a fuel tank blowout, but managed to put down near an old habitat. <em>They<\/em> had no clue who it belonged to, <em>we\u2019d<\/em> certainly never heard of it, and the signs on the roof had faded to oblivion, but the flag on the wall inside was Bhutanese.<br \/>\nI never even knew those guys had been up here.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Capt%20Allison%20Boshoff,%20Lunar%20Rescue%20Inc.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Capt. Allison Boshoff, Lunar Rescue Inc.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>While the Moon is still largely unexplored, half a century of landings &amp; missions have left infrastructure in the oddest places; Abandoned extended-stay landers, prototype lunar bases, temporary work shelters too difficult to remove after the job was done, and vehicles whose crews met with misfortune (or maybe foul play) and never made it home.<\/p>\n<p>Barring accident (or susceptibility to vacuum\/massive temperature fluctuation\/radiation bombardment\/incredibly abrasive dust) nothing really decays on the Lunar surface, so it\u2019s not uncommon to see someone using an old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_Roving_Vehicle\">Lunar Rover<\/a>, or a modified <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lunar_Escape_Systems\">Lunar Escape System<\/a> as a way of getting around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;People, and for that matter Robots, tend to forget that &#8216;Abandoned&#8217; isn&#8217;t the same thing as &#8216;Non-Functional&#8217;.<br \/>\nThe rate of change in tech, particularly in the early days, meant that a lot of stuff was switched off and mothballed, just left out there to &#8230; Well, not decay.<br \/>\n<em>Wait<\/em>, maybe?<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve fired up the odd mothballed bot in my time, and some of them are still wandering around today.<br \/>\nOf course, some of them are territorial &amp; violent, so it&#8217;s worth hiding behind a rock when you hit &#8216;On&#8217;.&#8221;<br \/>\n~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Lemon-Yellow-Sun.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>&#8216;Lemon-Yellow-Sun&#8217;, Selenologist &amp; Former Warbot<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Technology has advanced, and intelligent robots, while not exactly commonplace, no longer draw crowds. Oddly, non-mobile AI is not a thing; There\u2019s something about the process of building an artificial intelligence that means that smart robots working controls is a better idea than a central mainframe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Half A Century Of Subterfuge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe success of the Apollo missions and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/N1_%28rocket%29\">N1 launch failures<\/a> of the Soviet Lunar program lead most to believe that the Space Race was over. January 1973 changed all that.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LK_%28spacecraft%29\">Soyuz LK<\/a> landing on the Ocean of Storms kicked the partially-mothballed US Space Program back into action, which further encouraged the Soviet program, and the whole thing snowballed from there, neither side willing to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> be on the Moon.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>~ <a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Dr%20Maxim%20Leonov,%20Lunar%20Historian.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Maxim Leonov (no relation), Lunar Historian<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite setbacks, the Soviet N1\/L3 program continued, with a manned landing in the early 70\u2019s.<br \/>\nThe Apollo program, intended to end at Apollo 17, was kicked back into life by this, and they plow\u00a0ahead into the extended stay missions<\/p>\n<p>Both sides built moonbases, explored, built infrastructure, and looked for resources, all the while keeping tabs on what the other side were doing.<\/p>\n<p>Accusations of spying and sabotage were, and still are common, but despite outbreaks of conflict &amp; combat, the situation somehow never turned into an all-out Lunar war.<br \/>\nThe Cold War hasn\u2019t really ended, though it has calmed down somewhat, in part because of the sheer complexity of international alliances &amp; allies.<\/p>\n<p>The Moon is largely self-sufficient when considered as a whole, though corporate and national interests &amp; squabbles do their best to complicate things, leading to a certain D.I.Y. aesthetic among the more independent <del>Loonies<\/del> Lunar inhabitants. <em>Don\u2019t<\/em> call them Loonies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Influences<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronauts_in_Trouble\">Astronauts In Trouble<\/a><\/strong>, for the blue-collar astronaut vibe, and the idea that intelligent robots are just a thing.<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atomic-robo.com\/\">Atomic Robo<\/a><\/strong>, for Action Science! and the Gonzo approach to history<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Planetary_%28comics%29\">Planetary<\/a><\/strong>, for the secret history of the world vibe.<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Space\">Ministry of Space<\/a><\/strong>, for general alt-history awesomeness<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Pre-Gens<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/BRC_Resources\/Giant%20Steps%20-%20ARRPG%20-%20Lt%20Col%20William%20Scott%20(Ret).pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lt.
