I try to do a Big Day\/Small Day cycle when traveling, to keep from getting burned out. It doesn’t always work, and it’s not always possible, but when it pays off it means I can better appreciate what I’ve done & seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday was a pretty big day, so today was a quiet one. I could<\/strong> have gone to the nearby port of Scrabster & taken the ferry to Stromness in the Orkneys, then back again, as a day trip, but it’s a long-ass way to go to not really see much beyond a small town; Felt like it’d be missing the point of going to the aforementioned Orkneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead I stayed in Thurso & had a very quiet day indeed, because bloody everything is shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had coffee & a paninini at the cafe in the Tesco supermarket because it was the only thing open that wasn’t a pub. Or the place selling the “best kebabs in Thurso”, which as near as I can tell is accurate because it’s the only kebab spot in Thurso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I took a walk along the coastal clifftop path until it dumped me out into suburbia, then wandered back again. Also found that little piece of sea glass a really long way from the beach; It probably got transported by a person, but I like to think a huge storm wave deposited it on the beach access stairs 40′ or so above the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It being the day before St. Patrick’s Day, and the owners of the place I’m staying being from Ireland (Dingwal, maybe?), there was a distinctly Irish celebration happening in the restaurant\/bar across the hall. Not loud enough to be an issue, but from the sound of it folks were having a good time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
