{"id":766,"date":"2016-05-03T14:48:13","date_gmt":"2016-05-03T02:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/?p=766"},"modified":"2016-05-15T16:01:37","modified_gmt":"2016-05-15T04:01:37","slug":"night-bus-to-wellington-by-way-of-the-forbidden-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/?p=766","title":{"rendered":"Night Bus to Wellington, By Way Of THE FORBIDDEN PLACE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Janjo &amp; the Miscellaneous Children\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>(opening for Edwin Fracas &amp; the Shower of Bastards at the\u00a0Tropicana\u00a0Lounge this\u00a0Saturday)<\/em><\/span> dropped me off at the bus stop for stage one of my trip to Wellington, the trip to Hamilton.<br \/>\nSadly, I was not able to find a Hamilton postcard; Most places were shut by the time I got there, though I\u00a0<strong>was<\/strong> able to find a net cafe to print my ticket for the night bus. Normally the InterCity bus folks don&#8217;t care, they just look for your name on the list, but for the night bus to Wellington, and presumably for other night buses, they wanted me to have a printout.<br \/>\nMaybe it makes it easier on the driver?<\/p>\n<p>The desire for a Hamilton Tourist-Type postcard was so that I could send it to the GIS Team at my former job, as we&#8217;d had &#8230; How to put this? &#8230;\u00a0<em><strong>issues<\/strong><\/em> with jobs concerning the city.<br \/>\nIssues involving 200%+ utilisation weeks because someone promised something without checking with the folks who actually had to do the work.<br \/>\nIssues involving taking fit-for-task data and making it objectively &amp; demonstrably worse, at the client&#8217;s request.<br \/>\nI could go on, but I won&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>So, without a postcard, I tried something new in the selfie line; What do you think?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-780\" src=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20160502_201511174\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201511174.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-781 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Stopover in Hamilton\" width=\"530\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hoarde.net\/craigblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_20160502_201411837.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I prefer the first one my own self.<\/p>\n<p>I had a 4\u00bd hour wait in Hamilton, so I checked the movie theatre across the road from the transport station\u00a0<em>(which closed at 6pm, thank you very much Hamiltron)<\/em> and found a conveniently-timed session of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wilderpeople.com\/\"><em>Hunt for the Wilderpeople<\/em><\/a>, so ate up some time that way. The theatre even stored my pack for me; It seems that they get a lot of backpackers.<\/p>\n<p>The bus eventually arrived, pretty much on time.<br \/>\nI&#8217;d opted for the Gold Class option, only available on a few buses, with wider &amp; more reclining seats, in the downstairs portion of the bus. The steerage passengers went upstairs, but more on that later.<br \/>\nThe whole reason I traveled from Tauranga to Hamilton was to intercept the night bus with the comfy seats; The train is inconveniently timed, and the bus options due south from Tauranga, while they would have done the job, did not offer as much of a chance of sleeping.<\/p>\n<p>I think I fell asleep somewhere in Taupo; I do remember the approach to, and main street of, the town, but I don&#8217;t remember leaving. I recall bits of Turangi, a bit of the Desert Road\u00a0<em>(one of the nasty corners)<\/em> and Waiouru, Palmerston North, and Bulls, where my seatmate got out and I was able to claim the window seat for the last <del>snooze<\/del>\u00a0leg of the trip.<br \/>\nTook me a while to work out how to deploy the leg rest, and how to lie so that the lights of the oncoming vehicles didn&#8217;t hit me right in the eyes, but I slept pretty well, and got into Wellington in the cold grey light of pre-dawn.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, remember those steerage passengers upstairs?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m pretty confident that an elderly couple sat in the Gold Class area without tickets, and possibly without realising it.<br \/>\nOne of them sat downstairs, and the other upstairs, but came down at regular intervals; Basically, at every stop.<br \/>\nWhen a seat opened up, he took it.<br \/>\nThe driver, he did not seem to care, or even notice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Janjo &amp; the Miscellaneous Children\u00a0(opening for Edwin Fracas &amp; the Shower of Bastards at the\u00a0Tropicana\u00a0Lounge this\u00a0Saturday) dropped me off at the bus stop for stage one of my trip to Wellington, the trip to Hamilton.
