A better day

I’m recovering from the awful day yesterday. Kinda tired & twitching, but better than yesterday.

Also, I got a better shot of my Keep The Light Out system for the bunk bed.

A nice thing happened in the late hours yesterday; Got a “save the date” for some friends wedding in November next year, which did cheer me up to see. I already knew the date, to be fair, but this makes it more real, somehow?

Chatted with a friend in the US in the morning; Rather than taking up a table during the breakfast service, I sat on the smokers ledge outside in the alley, so I was at times sharing the space with

  • Scooter riders who’d come down, do an awkward three point turn in a space the size of a king sized bed, and go back up the alley
  • People passing through from my hostel or the one next door
  • Actual smokers actually smoking
  • Someone looking for the people they were supposed to pick up, maybe? They had a list of a few names, but also a motorcycle helmet, so I’m not sure how that was supposed to work
  • A very bored child on a bicycle

Went out for breakfast/brunch at what seems to have become my regular cafe, then followed it up with somewhere different, because a balcony with trees seemed like a nice idea.

This Grab rider has a little helmet for their phone.

Grab is the Uber equivalent here, and maybe in a bunch of East Asia. I used the car version to get to my airport hotel & to the hostel, but they also have a bike version, which is what this person is. You can’t see it, but they have a second helmet attached to the side of the scooter.

The big advantage for me is that the price is agreed & set before you ‘book’ the car, so it’s harder for the scams to happen; Price won’t change, destination is fixed, and they have some security stuff where you can raise an alarm from the app.

I went for a walk to the French Quarter in the afternoon, but the vibe was a little weird. There was a setup for some kind of concert at one end of the lake, blasting out music at a deafening volume, a bunch of barriers to make roads into pedestrian areas, and a bunch of probably police around.

It felt a little off to me, probably because of yesterday, so I turned my “Exploring French Quarter” into “Stroll Around The Lake” and enjoyed that instead.
