Last day in Hanoi

Today was mostly packing up & forward planning. I’m operating in the hope that the completely bonkers way that tour & travel booking seems to work here is actually going to happen as planned, and I’ve added some extra bits, booked myself, to finish out the Vietnam portion of the trip.

Brunch at the usual place. The Sunday crew here do things a little different to the weekday one, so there was hot sauce in the breakfast Banh Mi
Trying to capture the architecture

Had a nicely lazy start to the day, chatting with a couple of friends online & reading, but eventually got up, got a breakfast, and attacked the list of things for the day. I did go for a walk, but … The sky was overcast & the traffic fumes felt worse today, so it wasn’t a long one.

My original plan for Vietnam was to exit via Ho Chi Minh City, but that’s a lot of travel, and I’ve kinda lost interest in the idea. Instead, I’m prioritising places that have been recommended in the north & middle of the country; Cat Ba Island, Ninh Binh, & Hoi An.

I wouldn’t mind coming back to Vietnam, but probably not as a solo trip, and not ‘winging it’. I’ve learned that it’s just too chaotic, and too much, when I’m by myself. Or at least Hanoi is.

I’ve got my flights booked out of Vietnam, flying from Da Nang & skipping the south entirely, going straight to Siem Reap in Cambodia. I have accommodation booked in Siem Reap, because they wanted an address for the visa, but when filling in the visa application on attempt #2, saw that they also wanted my exit ticket, so there’s going to be an attempt #3.

I decided that it was later than I wanted to be doing things, and I had packing to do. Plus, missing two different things on the form doesn’t suggest that my concentration is where I’d like it to be, so that’s a good time to stop.

I would call the architecture style “this is why regulations are a good thing.”

I have no idea whether Hanoi has building inspection or standards or anything like that.
They certainly don’t seem t have road rules
