Gen Con 2026: The Endless Spinning

The title eventually makes sense; Don’t worry about it for now.

The first Gen Con thing of the year for me happened this weekend, when convention badges¹ went on sale & hotel rooms² became available.

I get a special badge for special people who spend too much money on their badge because it comes with a bunch of perks including a downtown hotel room that’s more-or-less guaranteed to be connected to the habitrail hamster tube skywalk network. Coming from outside of Indianapolis, and indeed of the USA, it’s worth the extra cost to get that & not have to deal with late night & early morning taxi rides.

Badge purchasing went fine.

Having purchased a special special badge, I could then click on the button which appeared, to go and book a hotel room, and watch the spinny “connecting to the hotel portal” thing appear.

And sit there. Spinning.

Endlessly spinning

Isn’t that … Special.

Over in a Gen Con community on Discord, other people were also noticing this, and were commenting. The organisers of Gen Con had also noticed it, possibly because of several dozen messages and emails, and were looking into what had gone wrong.

Surprisingly, nobody got that upset, at least at first. Various bored nerds looked at the site traffic or lack thereof and suggested that it was probably in the system of the folks providing the hotel portal. Mostly people gave thumbs-up reactions to the official “we’re working on it” posts, and an increasing number wrote “SpinSpinSpin” or posted animated pictures of spinning things. One wrote a little song.

It took a smidge over half an hour, but they got it sorted, so I now have;

  • My special special badge
  • My hopefully very nice hotel room

Next big scheduled thing is event tickets, in May sometime I think.
