In which Craig starts with rogue military units and ends up, as he so frequently does, at Space Pirates, Ben considers Monastic Orders in the Emperor’s Name, Kevin dreams of Astral Wolves, and Tonya wonders what responsibilities we have towards past & future species, and just what you do when confronted with your frozen mythical ancestors.

Great episode. My first thought was of Space Romulus and Remus and galactic. Perhaps a particular cult revolving around the myths surrounding the founding of an empire that is starting a swift decline. The goal might be the hunt for and recovery of the the species of space “wolf” that raised the mythic founders of the empire.
Additionally this topic makes me think of an episode of Escape Pod featuring trans-humans at the entropic end of the universe and features space wolves. Or at least that is how I recall it going. http://escapepod.org/2010/02/13/ep238-wind-from-a-dying-star/
Great show!
Yoink!
For clarity, we put this card in The Box, for later. When it comes up, we will all use our Surprised Face. Yes.
I listened to that Escape Pod episode at work yesterday, while watching very slow progress bars.
Very good story.
We’re delighted people are enjoying the show! Thanks for getting in touch.
We’re looking forward to listening to the Escape Pod story you recommended, and the idea of ‘the Roman empire in space’ is something we’ve put on a card for the Mystery Box, since several of us interpreted it in different ways. You’ve made a contribution already!

Excellent episode. My first thought on the title was a Space Marine chapter as well; kudos for coming up with so many non-obvious answers and then a pretty decent twist on the obvious answer.
But as much as I liked the Space Hamster Empire, I’m totally stealing the idea for trans-cephalopods for a game I’m working on.
Glad you liked it, Steve! Let us know how your game goes. *is intensely curious*

“I’m totally stealing the idea for trans-cephalopods”
And it is right that you should do so, because Friggin’ Trans-Cephalopods!
(I too would be interested in hearing about the game you’re working on)
The project is a totally ridiculous space dungeon crawler – basically OSR meets Captain Video & The Video Rangers with a completely ridiculous dice mechanic. I’ve decided trans-cephalopods need to be one of the few playable non-human races.
I’ll let you know when it’s done.
That sounds awesome! Also, like it will fit with the next card we are recording, “Space Wreck Exploration.” That show won’t drop till late August tho, so we won’t know if you won till then.
[edit]-Correction, that ep drops late in September. I keep forgetting how nuts our buffer is.
