Episode One Hundred And Fourteen – DIE FARBEN!

People and objects changing from greyscale to colour is a wonderful way to depict change, be it in aspects of the world, or in the world you inhabit. But from the point of view of someone who’s accustomed to a greyscale world, it’d look uncannily, possibly horrifically, wrong.

Colour has been leeched from the world by Our Oppressive Grey Overlords, but a few members of the resistance hold objects which have retained their colour, and wield powers based upon that colour. Of course, once they’ve wielded their powers, the colour sticks around, so it’s pretty hard to be stealthy about it.

As for a sense of color entering a world, check out Trial of The Sun, a webcomic by Jeinu. It’s about a transgender young man undertaking a trial in place of his father. He’s joined by an immigrant to his lands and an elf… who may have a passenger of her own. Color signifies magic or holy essence in this world, otherwise it’s in grayscale. Currently on hiatus until the artist can calm down enough to think about his story.

Those color charts were sort of a mini-fad at TSR in the mid-80s. Marvel Superheroes introduced the concept, I think, and then we had TSR’s Conan game, 3rd edition (and only 3rd edition) Gamma World, and a revamp of Star Frontiers that printed a four-color chart using two shades of blue, yellow, and a very yellowish green. The only other place I remember seeing them is in Pacesetter’s house system, as used in Chill, Timemaster, and Star Ace.

Ah, I remember Marvels Supers, with it’s FASERIP mnemonic, and the descriptive names of the abilities levels very fondly.

The colourful results chart does seem to have fallen favour. Was it just a fad?

      • Tim Soholt says:

I think it might have been just something that a couple people latched on to. Pacesetter was founded by a group of ex-TSR employees in the middle of TSR’s spate of color chart games.

(Incidentally, I don’t know all of this off the top of my head; I have Shannon Applecline’s Designers & Dragons on my phone.)
