This is episode is sponsored by the collective socialist consciousness known to your puny human minds as “Canada”.
Sorry if you haven’t been assimilated yet, we are all out shoveling snow, eh.
In a bilingual country with a dashingly handsome Prime Minister, super heroics must include a strict Francophone quota.
Your gritty cyber-punk cabal is poised for immediate action – if they could just stop apologising to one another.
The ur-Canuck is waiting. The ur-Canuck is watching. The ur-Canuck is insistently, politely unstoppable. And it’s knitted you mittens.
Striking north from your crumbling society, you and your group push towards salvation through dangers both real and imagined.
(Apologies. Genuine inhabitants of “The Canadia” were hard to come by, so we we had to settle for a lost, stair-well dwelling geographer, a travel-shy antipodean, and the finest quisling that Her Majesty could spare. The wild generalisations and stereotypes abound, but at least we didn’t do the “aboot” joke. Small mercies and all that.)

Poem – Ithaka by C.P. Cavafy
As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
Poem – Antigonish by William Hughes Mearns
As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there!
He wasn’t there again today,
I wish, I wish he’d stay away!”
When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door…
Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn’t there,
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away…

Part-way though collecting the scribe notes links for this episodes, I started to wonder; “If the Power Rangers were localised to Scotland in the 90’s it would have starred the Trainspotting cast as the Mighty Morphine Power Rangers?”
By the way, what’s the next topic for the BRC?
It’s “Our Listener, International Human of Mystery”. Have at it!
Greg Kinnear was Captain Amazing in “Mystery Men.” Could that be what Craig was thinking of?
Also, a highly amusing typo in the show notes that might be a good candidate for the Mystery Box: “All Flesh Must Be Eastern.”
A strong possibility, though he was more Adam West from Family Guy than from Batman ’66.
And that typo might be better suited to a regrettably titled niche-interest web site than a topic, so I might just fix that…
Nope, I got the actor’s name wrong – I was thinking of Matt Keeslar.
