Storyteller Cards
We were contacted by Jason Tagmire, who pointed us at his Kickstart for Storyteller Cards; These idea-prompters are very much where the Big Red Couch lives, and my personal favorite is “Screaming Boxer In Library With Treasure Map”.
If you like the Take An Idea And Run With It basis of the Big Red Couch, these cards are totally worth a look.

The Gutter Skypes
The Gutter Skypes were kind enough to talk about us on their podcast, due to the emailing talents of listener Bob H, so we’d like to return the favor, & encourage you to wander over and listen to their Actual Play Podcast.
It is through them, and them alone, that I am now aware of the existence of “Leopard Women of Venus”, and my life is better for it. ~craig~

Current Tabletop RPG Offers
Every single book in the Monsters and Other Childish Things game line from Arc Dream publications is available in a bundle at 75% off until the end of May, or until 100 people take them up on the offer. It’s a fantastic series that gets referenced in the Big Red Couch, and detailed reviews are up at RPG.net.

Additionally, the creators of Fate Core and Fate Accelerated Edition, Evil Hat, have always intended to release PDFs of the games pay-as-you-want.  They have kindly opened the offer early, and have said that Kickstarter backers (such as The Big Red Couch) can share links to downloads of the files, along with donation options should people decide the products are worth money.  Contact us in this thread with an email address or or email us directly at bigredcouch AT hoarde DOT net, and we’ll share the information.  They’re great games, and you’ll undoubtedly be hearing more about them as the Big Red Couch proceeds.

This is my experience as well. I think the way that Thadeous proepsos and does his game is actually the better way to do it. You end up with a better mechanically balanced party and you can more easily work together on complimentary backgrounds and personalities. And that’s the way that I originally had wanted to do this show, for the record. However, although that’s an ideal way of doing it, it’s ~rarely~ worked that way in my own experience (and I’ve been playing for almost 20 years myself) and from the experiences of those I know and have talked to. I have tried, on at least four occasions with D D4e, to bring players to the table for a first session entirely devoted to character generation and what generally ends up happening instead is that people come to the table having already made decisions about what they want to play. Those already made decisions might be I want to play a defender or it might be showing up to the table with a fully built character or three. The moment people join a game, they start thinking of what might be fun to play. It’s only natural. So although there may be a better way to do party building, addressing what is probably the more common method of making a party work together and mesh is arguably more valuable to more people.

I’m not sure whether this is spam or not; Our spam-catcher thought so, but this is clearly RPG-related, so I de-spammed it.

Not sure who “Thadeous” is, but since the New Zealand accent can be an absolute shocker to decipher, I’m guessing it’s a mis-hearing of a name.

I recently dvscoiered your blog and am IN LOVE with your stunning girls. Although I live in New York City, I have a Black Lab/GSP/Coonhound mix that hails from GA. So as you can imagine, I have a bit of a soft spot for big canine girls from GA. I truly hope that you are feeling better and on the mend and look forward to when you start posting again.

This is a great response to Arittra’s point, I think.

If you came to a game wanting to play Otherkin in a system that didn’t really recognise species other than those in the book, it might take a bit of wrangling with the GM and other players to shoe-horn your character choice in.

We’ve been having some good results with various FATE iterations, though. I managed to write up a character for Dresden Files that was simultaneously a dead woman and a Plant Spirit. (I’d just seen HellBoy, and was apparently not feeling particularly inventive.) It took some negotiation, but was very playable.

Is this for a medieval food court game? Let us know how it goes.

    • Avatar photo Craig says:

Interesting; A historic foodcourt, which I guess is a market with some tables, or possibly a long-running fair, has some interesting directions available.
Off the top of my head, and focusing on the “Wars” aspect, a game set in & around a market/souq in Jerusalem during the First or Third Crusade would be … Exciting?

      • Avatar photo Tonya says:

Hmmm…Maybe more of a co-operative game, where the players are keeping an eye out for each other and making sure the souq as a whole doesn’t get burned down for being the wrong sort of people? That feels more like a computer/board game than an RPG, but still interesting.
Perhaps the ‘war’ is about who’s currency predominates, and the players are in the employ of one of the money-changers to try to influence stall-holders towards their bosses money? (callbacks to Spin-doctors there…)

I would enjoy to be anywhere near a beach!

    • Avatar photo Tonya says:

Yes, we do like to be beside the seaside.

You make a good point, that a foodcourt war could just as easily be about grabbing the best place for a food truck near a leisure hotspot, such as a beach. I can just see it now, Ice Cream vans vying for position with a fruit vendor that has all these fresh watermelons, cut and ready to eat, both of them getting dagger looks from a Pita Truck.
