Gen Con 2024

This was my “that game looks interesting” list, but it’s now shifted to being my “This Is What I’m Doing” list.

Here’s what it looks like currently; Clearly, there are some gaps I can fill with scheduled events, or I can go a bit free-form on it.
I’m planning on updating that schedule as and when it changes.

Title:
Stink 19
Short Description:
Welcome to the 19th annual meet and greet for gamers.
Long Description:
For over 20 years, a gathering of gamers has been called a Stink. Join us for the original Wednesday night event to meet fellow gamers. Play some games, meet gaming groups, or just hang out. It’s up to you. Joysticks, quarters, and pixelated graphics. Get ready to warp back to the time of arcade classics.
Event Type:
ZED – Isle of Misfit Events

This one’s a ‘maybe’ event for me. I might be turning up at the wrong time or something, but I feel like it’s declined as an event; I remember it being more lively in The Before Times.

Title:
What’s the Damage?
Short Description:
Players take on the role of investigators as a cold case threatens to tear an entire city apart.
Long Description:
When a renowned comedian is accused of a heinous act, the people of Cahokia demand justice. What follows is an investigation that will take players from one end of the city to another as they try to unravel a decades-old mystery.
Event Type:
RPG – Role Playing Game
Game System:
Coyote and Crow

https://www.gencon.com/events/253064

Native American Sci Fi RPG, with I think some aspects of spirituality or magic or fantasy, in a setting where European colonisation never happened. Spotted the name and got interested, read up and got more interested.
What absolutely sold me on trying it was the publisher’s stance of “This game is for everyone, but we ask that you play one of the nations we’ve made up, and not as a member of something real-world that you’re not a member of yourself, because you’re pretty likely to accidentally do something offensive”. That and the litany of complaints about that stance from people whose views I despise.
😁

A Post From The Game Designer Talking About This

Tales From the Loop

https://www.gencon.com/events/257534

I only discovered that the art books for TFTL existed by accident; I’d seen images on The Internets, but spotted the book on a chance visit to the Kalamazoo Public Library, which then told me the artist name, …
I didn’t get into the TV series, because it was just too Nordic for my mood at the time.

ENT – Entertainment Events

https://www.gencon.com/events/248903

I know nothing about this, and refuse to look it up. My friend Tom asked if I’d be interested, I said I’d go if I got a ticket, and I got a ticket, so I’m going.

https://www.gencon.com/events/265879

I’ve written about Rapscallion on here before, from the games I played last year; Pirates, spooky stuff, a map which is a persistent and yet changeable part of the game … I’m in.

The Murder Mavens are once more meddling in a local case. Can they solve the mystery before the suspects leave town?

Brindlewood Bay

https://www.gencon.com/events/263532

I was sick a lot as a child, and as a teenager. I’ve watched a lot of Murder, She Wrote & The Golden Girls, so a game of cosy mysteries is an easy sell.
And I backed the Kickstarter.

Title:
Best Leave Them Ghosts Alone

An Old Gods of Appalachia horror adventure set in a small town full of memories, ghosts, and promises unpaid.

Event Type:
RPG – Role Playing Game

Game System:
Old Gods of Appalachia

https://www.gencon.com/events/258084

Creepy-ass Appalachian horror. And I’ve spent several hours on a stuck train in those parts of the country; It’s beautiful, but you can absolutely see how you could lose a town in those mountains.

Title:
Tomorrow’s Messenger

Short Description:
At an old SATI site you discover a strange, high-tech device with a message calling for help. It’s time to go on a mission of rescue – but this is the Cretaceous Era, when dinosaurs rule the Earth.

Long Description:
Welcome to the Cretacious Era and Grevakc—a land of dinosaurs and danger, of myth and science, of hope and despair. Once upon a time in the far, far future, Space and Time Interglobal (usually just called SATI) sent thousands of people back to this era. But then the time travel stopped working, and those people were trapped (or perhaps abandoned) here. That was all generations ago. Now you’re exploring an old SATI site. It’s been like others you’ve uncovered, filled with interesting things from the future and from the past. Nothing truly astonishing—until that blue cylinder turned up. This is something new—a technologically advanced message, and it’s calling for help. It’s time to take your dinosaur companion and go on a mission of rescue! This adventure is set in the Predation campaign setting—a little bit science fiction, a little bit post-apocalypse, and a whole lot of dinosaurs!

Event Type:
RPG – Role Playing Game

Game System:
Cypher System

https://www.gencon.com/events/258115

I’ve played Cypher System a couple of times, once in it’s Numenera variant, and once as the core system.
